Em 1998, quando surgiu o sonho que nos levou a criar o programa Guerreiros Sem Armas, o Elos era formado por estudantes da Faculdade de Arquitetura de Santos que estavam no meio da experiência de aprendizado mais intensa e significativa de suas vidas até então: o Projeto Reviver o Museu de Pesca de Santos (que acabou de reabrir à visitação, por sinal). Essa experiência não foi oferecida pelo currículo da faculdade; foi fruto da busca por mergulhar na realidade e construir aprendizado que fosse relevante não apenas para os estudantes, mas que fosse relevante para a sociedade e mais, especificamente, para a cidade na qual viviam. Essa busca levou-os a desenhar e empreender seu próprio currículo e pedagogia, que estava pautada na experiência direta, na interação com a realidade e, especialmente, no relacionamento com as pessoas para quem estávamos projetando.
Por isso, a primeira visão do Guerreiros Sem Armas era a de uma nova universidade. Como arquitetos, por um momento pensaram em realmente projetar e construir um espaço para isso, mas logo viram que isso poderia levar muito tempo e muito esforço, enquanto, por outro lado, poderiam começar já com cursos sem necessariamente ter um espaço próprio. Assim nasceu o Guerreiros Sem Armas, em 1999, como um curso vivencial intensivo de 31 dias. O nome da primeira e da segunda edição do programa foi Universidade Aberta de Verão, com o subtítulo Escola de Guerreiros Sem Armas.
Quinze anos se passaram, realizamos e aprendemos muitas coisas nesse tempo. O grupo que, inicialmente, era formado por 5 amigos agora é uma comunidade de 25 pessoas, 5 delas entre 1 e 6 anos de idade, convivendo juntas pelo menos 5 dias por semana e cultivando o que viemos a chamar de Filosofia Elos com seus princípios, valores e crenças e se dedicando a impulsionar esse movimento de fazer acontecer já o mundo que todos sonhamos. Aquele sonho inicial cresceu e transcendeu com a força dessa comunidade que o abraçou e fez dele também o seu sonho.
Agora, esse sonho cultivado coletivamente começa a se materializar com a aquisição de uma área verde de 18 mil metros quadrados no coração da Ilha de São Vicente. Ali construiremos um espaço de cultivo e aprendizagem da Filosofia Elos e todas suas dimensões, vivendo nossa comunidade, nos relacionando com as comunidades do entorno, cooperando com a natureza que nos abraça e que é um presente e uma responsabilidade numa cidade tão urbanizada e adensada como Santos. Será o nosso Oasis.

In 1998, when the dream that led us to create the Warriors Without Weapons program was born, Elos was formed by students from the Santos Architecture School who were in the midst of the most intense and meaningful learning experience of their lives up to that point: the “Projeto Reviver” and the Santos Fishing Museum (that had just reopened to the public). This experience was not offered in the college curriculum, it was the result of a desire to plunge into reality and build learning experiences that were relevant not only to the students, but also relevant to society and more specifically to the city in which they lived. This search led them to design and undertake their own curriculum and pedagogy that were based on the direct experience and interaction with reality, especially in the relationship with the people that they were designing for.
Therefore, the first vision of the Warriors Without Weapons was of a new university. As architects they thought of actually designing and constructing a space for this, but soon they saw that it could take too much time and effort, while on the other hand they could start creating courses right away without necessarily having their own space. Thus Warriors Without Weapons was born in 1999 as a 31-day experiential course. The name of the first and second edition of the program was the Summer Open University with caption School of Warriors Without Weapons.
Fifteen years have passed and we have accomplished and learned many things during this time. The group that, in the beginning, was made up of 5 friends, is now a community of 25 people, 5 of which are between 1 and 6 years of age, living together for at least 5 days a week and cultivating what we call the Elos Philosophy with its values, principles and beliefs and dedicating ourselves to propelling the movement of making the world we dream of happen now. The original dream grew and transcended with the strength of this community that embraced it and also made it their dream.
Now, this collectively cultivated dream is beginning to materialize with the acquisition of a 18,000 square meter green area in the heart of São Vicente Island. There we will build a space to cultivate learning of the Elos Philosophy in all its dimensions, living our community, establishing a relationship with the communities around us, and cooperating with the nature that embraces us and that is both a gift and a responsibility in a city as urban and dense as Santos. It will be our Oasis.
We share this news because we want you to be part of this journey too! The dream is big and so is the challenge – but you know that we love these sorts of things, right? We are talking of creating the infrastructure which, in the long run, will allow us to receive groups of up to 80 people for month-long immersion programs.
